I was thinking quite a bit about Robotech today as I listen to various podcasts about the show. Mainly ones that have James Luceno interviews.
I find the catalyst for the entire failure in the brand goes back to the Sentinels. Not finishing the Sentinels was to me the fall of the franchise. The failure of them to capitalize on the momentum of the original 1985 show at that time in 1986-87 was a huge blow. According to a Luceno interview that was on Space Station Liberty Carl Macek was beside himself that it was not done. I understand that Matchbox was putting up a lot of the money for the production but Harmony Gold itself was no slouch. They could have bet the bank and come out ahead. Was the failure of the Sentinels also why Carl left and started Streamline? I think so. I think he decided he was better off not working for a company that had no faith in their product. It shows to this day...
